Week of December 9, 2019

Toys for Tots Collection

On Thursday, December 12, students who bring a new toy to donate to Toys for Tots, may wear Athletic Wear on that day.  The toy must be brought on December 12, for the student to participate in Athletic Wear Day.

Thank you for donating to this worthy cause the US Marines sponsors annually to help the less fortunate.  Mr. Jim Bobbins who served in the Marines and works in our printshop/mailroom helps us to remember this important work.

Senior Trip Donations

Our Senior Class is headed to the Dominican Republic and Ecuador for our annual Mission Trips.  The dates of the trips are January 6-10, 2020.  The trips would not be possible without the donations from our Hickory Grove families.  Below is a list of the items we are asking for students to donate.

Monetary donations (cash only) are also being accepted to purchase food bags one the students arrive in the Dominican Republic.  Students assemble and distribute the food bags to families in the villages and communities while they are there ministering to the local people.  A small gift of $15 will feed a family of four for one month.

We will collect items from December 9 - 13.

Please contact the high school office at 704-531-4077 if you have any questions.  Thank you for your contributions to the people of the Dominican Republic and Ecuador.

Candy Cane Fundraiser

Dear Parents,

The Hickory Grove Christian School Exodus Yearbook Staff is having a Candy Cane Fundraiser.  We are selling Candy Canes to parents and students.

Our staff will take parents’ orders electronically and surprise their children on Tuesday, December 17.  We are also selling Candy Canes to students before school (in Room 4206 -- Mrs. Nelson’s Room) and during lunch (High School lunches) to surprise their friends.

Each Candy Cane and message is $1.00. We will be taking cash or check only. Checks made to HG with Yearbook Fundraiser written on the memo line.

Parents’ Instructions:
(1) Fill out the Google Survey Form (see link below) giving the student’s name, first-period teacher’s name, and the special message to send with the Candy Cane. (Parents will have the ability to fill out more than one survey if they have more than one child at the school.)
(2) Send in the money via an envelope and give it to Mrs. Nelson in Room 4206.
(3) Address the envelope with the student’s name, grade, first-period teacher’s name, and CC Fundraiser.

Once the money is received, the Yearbook Staff will print out the parent’s message and tie a Candy Cane to the message.  The Candy Canes will be delivered Tuesday, December 17 in first-period classes.

The Deadline for participation is noon, Sunday, December 16.

Student’s Instructions:
(1) Candy Canes will be sold before school in Mrs. Nelson’s Room 4206.  Students must have money (cash or check) to order the Candy Canes.
(2) Candy Canes will be sold during lunch in the Yearbook Room 3008 (FLC Basement). Candy Canes will be sold before school in Mrs. Nelson’s Room 4206.

The following will be printed on the back of the message card.

The Story of the Candy Cane

In certain areas of Europe, there was said to be a ban on public displays of Christianity. A candy maker prayed to find a way that he could offer children a Christmas gift that would allow him to communicate the real story of Christmas. His prayer leads to the idea of the candy cane.

The Shepherd’s Staff: Jesus is the shepherd to His followers, and the Bible notes that the “sheep” would hear His voice and follow Him.

Jesus our Rock: Hard candy to remind children that Jesus was our “rock” -- dependable and strong.

By His Striped: Representative of the crucifixion and the blood that Jesus shed for our sins.

Red -- His Shed Blood: Through His blood, we are given salvation and life.

White -- Purification from Sin: White stripes represent the holiness and purity of Jesus, who was and is sinless.

Sweet Fragrance of Christ: Peppermint, similar to hyssop, which was used for sacrifice and purification reminding us of the sacrifice that Jesus made for us.

Broken for Us: When the candy cane is eaten, it is often broken, a reminder that when Jesus was crucified, his body was broken.

A Gift: The candy cane was also made to be given as a gift, representing the love of Jesus when He gave us the gift of salvation.
